A necklace of nine volcanic islands set in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Azores is a sub-tropical wonderland that is very much a part of Portugal. You’ll get to explore five of the islands, including São Miguel – the forested beauty blessed with volcanic peaks, sparkling lagoons, geothermal spots, and waters that are home to sperm whales, beaked whales, and dolphins. More adventure awaits on the remaining islands, including opportunities to climb to the summit of 2,351-metre-high Mount Pico, enjoy crater rim walks and thermal pool swims, and spend time in the UNESCO-listed city of Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira Island.

Daily Walk Options

Easier Walks

Good paths but walks are a bit longer. Some walks, particularly in mountain areas, may have sections over rough or steeper terrain.

Accommodation

Hotel do Canal - Azores

Situated opposite the marina with views of Pico beyond, this modern 4-star hotel is in keeping with the marine feel of Horta with a decked balcony and nautical photographs. This is a great base for exploring Horta.

Hotel São Jorge, São Jorge - Azores

Hotel Sao Jorge Garden sits with an enviable view overlooking the coast and is just 200m from the centre of Velas. It has small pool in the gardens with views out to the sea as well as a small bar.

Hotel Marina Atlantico, Ponta Delgada - Azores

This four-star hotel has a prominent position next to the Ponta Delgada Marina, just a stone’s throw from the ocean. This contemporary hotel was designed with a nod to the island’s nautical past.

Hotel Terceira Mar, Terceira - Azores

This four-star hotel sits below Monte Brasil and looks out onto the ocean. It features a restaurant, bar, spa area, infinity saltwater pool, and an indoor heated pool. A great place to spend your time on Terceira.

It's best to be prepared for all weather conditions. To make it easier, here is a list of items you should consider packing.

If you prefer to book the holiday without flights and make your own travel arrangements you will still be able to make use of the return group transfers between the airport and hotel, which are included in the cost of your holiday. You must contact us on +44 (0)20 3974 8865 or email reservations@hfholidays.co.uk at least 8 weeks before your holiday start date to provide your flight details if you wish to join the transfers. If you do not contact us, we will assume you are making independent travel arrangements.

If you are arriving ahead of the group, and are meeting them at the first hotel, please leave a message at the hotel reception for the HF Holidays’ leader or local leader, detailing your room number, and a mobile telephone number if possible. The leader will contact you once the group arrives. If you are arriving after the group, a message will be left for you at the hotel reception, welcoming you and giving details of the time and place to meet the group.
