Leading for HF Holidays enables you to be part of an exceptional team. It’s also a fabulous way to meet new people, make new friends, and walk in some of the best places on the planet.
If you have a passion for walking and the great outdoors, why not take your first steps into becoming a volunteer leader for HF Holidays. You'll play an integral role in our holidays by sharing your knowledge and skills with individuals and groups eager to appreciate coast and countryside landscapes on foot.
Not only will you stay in beautiful locations and experience incredible walks, but you’ll also enjoy great food and meet like-minded people of all ages and backgrounds. Best of all, you'll be part of a community alongside our members and guests, many of whom book with us year after year.
Currently, our volunteers lead walking holidays from our 16 characterful country houses and partner hotels throughout the UK. You’ll have the flexibility to choose how much time you spend leading each year and be joining a team of nearly 600 passionate leaders who help provide memorable experiences for over 60,000 guests annually.
What Skills & Qualities Do I Need?
It takes a special kind of someone to become an HF Holidays Leader. Aside from being passionate about walking, you’ll need to be a great communicator who can work closely and constructively with other leaders as well as our country house teams. No previous experience is required, and you'll need to make a minimum commitment to lead for three weeks, within two years.
We’d like our HF Holidays leaders to be:
- Friendly and approachable
- Reliable, punctual, and well organised
- Cheery on the greyest and wettest of days
- Sensitive to the needs of others
- Confident to speak in front of small groups
- Welcoming, especially to new walkers
- An excellent navigator with knowledge of map-reading
- Able to use a compass
- Experienced in walking the types of landscapes they want to lead in
- Fit enough to lead five full-day walks in a week
- Confident to lead a walk without having covered the route previously

What is the selection process?

Stage 1
Read the role requirements and decide if volunteer walk leading is right for you
Stage 2
Complete an online application form
Stage 3
A member of our Leader Recruitment Team will be in touch to discuss the role and your application
Stage 4
If successful, you’ll be invited to attend a three-night residential Assessment Course
Stage 5
If you pass the course, you’ll join HF Holidays and be eligible to lead for us
